St. Patrick’s Island was banged up, unkept, and home to some sketchy people. Along with the CMLC’s plan to redevelop East Village, came the vision to design a park for today and tomorrow. Enter Civitas Landscape Architecture Firm. The team at Civitas, headed by Mark Johnson, designed a beautiful, functional, natural park for generations.
It would have been easy to interview Mark and hear his thoughts about the design of St. Patrick’s Island, but that wouldn’t do it justice. So we strapped a big camera and a gimbal on a bike. Even then it wasn’t good enough, we needed the film to be genuine – so we stuck Mark on the bike with a microphone and set him free to ride and describe the vision and features of St. Patrick’s Island.
What we ended up with was a very deep and thoughtful film straight from the brilliant mind of the park’s creator.
“It’s really simple to stick a camera up and watch someone speak. It’s also incredibly boring – no matter who that person is. So I make sure we do something interesting. Whether that’s strapping a big camera on a bike, creating stunning visuals, or pushing where we go with the camera. It has to be interesting.”
